The Sign of the Son of Man

Matthew 24:30. “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

I hesitate to use artist’s renderings such as this, although as I studied this one I was impressed withall  the detail. Truth:  We do NOT know what the sign in the heavens will look like. We do NOT know when this tremendous event will take place.

We do know from verse 27 that there will be something similar to an enormous lightning flash spreading from east to west. We know there will be some visible sign in the heavens. We know His second coming will be visible to the human eye. We know that all the tribes of the earth will mourn when He comes;those who have followed Anti-Christ will know without a doubt that they were deceived.

There is some controversy over whether all people all around the earth will see His return all at once, or if the scripture is talking about those nations that have gathered together and surrounded Jerusalem in preparation for a final and total destruction of the Jewish nation  I do not know the answer to that question. Zechariah 14:1-5 and  Rev. 1:7 are used as proof texts that it will be only the nations who have gathered around Jerusalem. If you are interested, I urge you to study those passages and others on your own.

We do know from other prophecies that people from all around the earth will come to Jerusalem to see Jesus Christ as He governs from Jerusalem during the Millenial Kingdom. This belief is supported in Isaiah 2:2-4; 52:7; 66:19-21, and Zechariah 8:23.

His coming will be spectacular, overwhelming. It will strike terror into the hearts of all who have rejected Him. It will make Anti-Christ look puny by comparison.
