As they were increased, so they sinned against Me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.
They eat up the sin of My people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
These verses continue the theme of the part the priests played in Israel’s downfall, a disgraceful part of the whole story. The priests were actually gaining from the sin of the people. They were accepting bribes; they were enjoying feasting on the meat of the sin offerings, so that the sin of the people was of physical, selfish benefit to the priests.
By their carnal behavior, the priests were encouraging and contributing to the sin of the people. God promised that the honor and dignity that came with being part of the priesthood would be destroyed; their glory would be turned into shame.
I am reminded of Luke 12:48. “To whom much is given, much will be required.”
