Precept upon Precept

Isaiah 28:12-13. “To  whom He said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line: here a little, and there a little, that they might go, and  fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.”

Through His prophet, Isaiah, God warned Israel and Judah over and over. He told of their coming destruction and downfall. He warned them of their captivity if they did not forsake the worship of idols and turn back to Him.

He taught them, line upon line and precept upon precept, as if they were little children.

But they would not hear. They refused to repent, and they hardened their hearts against the God Who loved them. They were bored and irritated with line upon line, precept upon precept. They resented being warned. They resisted being told they needed to repent. and accept the rest God offered them. They refused His mercy.

And so retribution came. They were broken, and trapped, and taken captive by the Assyrians.

  1. As often as the cycle has been repeated, you’d think they’d learn. Just like all the rest of us,
I guess. We tend to want what we want, and sometimes it takes a lifetime to understand that we’re at peace and have all we could desire when we submit to God.
