False Piety

Isaiah 7:10-12. “Moreover the Lord spake again unto Ahaz saying, Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God: ask it either to the depth, or in the height above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.”

Can you imagine the arrogance of Ahaz? God had offered him a free pass to ask for any kind of sign as a pledge of the fulfillment of His word. God said, “You can seek a sign from the depth (an allusion to Ahaz’dabbling in the occult) or the height, from heaven itself.

Ahaz piously said, “Oh no, I couldn’t do that.  I can’t tempt (test) the Lord.”

Wait! What?  Hadn’t God just given him carte blanche to do exactly that?  God was offering Ahaz the opportunity to get reassurance that God would keep His promises, but Ahaz turned up his self-righteous nose and went his own way.  Again.

His behavior, however, leads to one of the most precious promises in the entire Word of God.

  1. Love this great reminder to ask for it all. We are safe in asking because if we ask of anything outside of His will most likely we aren’t going to get it. That’s exactly what I want. Thank you for sharing this piece.
