Ephesians 2: 20. “And are bult upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone:”
The household of God consists of born-again believers who are built upon the teacings (scripture) of the apostles and prophets. Jesus Christ, of course, is the main authority, the cornerstone upon which the entire structure depends.
Here is what my Dake’s Study Bible has to say:
Themelios is the foundation on which to build (Matt. 13:35). Jesus Christ is the true foundation (I Cor. 3:11). The apostles and prophets have also been made part of the foundation of Christianity (v. 20). Others are built into the structure of the church. All of them are the temple of God and a habitation of God through the Holy Spirit.
The Greek word for cornerstone in this verse is akrogoniaios, meaning placed at an extreme corner, the corner foundation stone.
Without that corner foundation stone, a building becomes unstable. Jesus cannot be removed from the church. He is the foundation upon which it stands.
