Slain the Enmity

Ephesians 2:16. “And that He might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:”

When Jesus gave up His life on the cross and then rose from the grave, he gained the victory over sin and death not just for the Jews, but for all mankind.  He put to death the enmity between the Jews and the Gentiles, uniting them through the cross and by the church.

Alll who have come to Christ for forgiveness, redemption, and salvation are, then, a part of the same body.  No longer divided by the Law, the middle wall of partition, we are united with Him as the Bride of Christ.

You may ask why Paul seems to be laboring this issue.  Just think for a little while about history, the persecution of Jews and Christians down through the century, the hatred of the Jews and the enmity among Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Who do you suppose is at the bottom of all that bloodshed and hatred?

Certainly not God!  Satan is the culprit, and he never stops devising new ways to divide us and turn us against each other.  Only in Christ, and in His church, can we find peace with God and peace with others.
