The Fulness of Times

Ephesians 1:10. “That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him.”

This continuation of verse 9, which told us about the mystery of His will being revealed, goes on to teach us that we are moving toward  a time that Gopd already has purposed when all things will be headed up in Christ.

In this verse, dispensation  is used in several different ways.  It can refer to stewardship, order, administration, and, in this verse, an economy. An economy is an ordered condition of things. Domestic economy is the ordering of a household. Sometimes it is used in a political context, wherein each nation of the world has its own economy.  No one household will have the same ordering, or economy, of another, just as each nation has its own way of running things.

In the same way, there are several different dispensations, or economies, running through the Word of God. Each is unique and appropriate for its time, and does not necessarily prevail in another.

There is a difference between a dispensation and an age. An age is a period of time in which a particular economy prevails.  For instance, before the Flood, God dealt with man according to conscience. After the Flood, a new exonomy was instituted by God.Civil magistracy was introduced; then God called Abraham out to make him to be the beginning of a new race through which the Savior of all nations would come.

I do not intend to turn this post into a study of dispensations, but I hope it will trigger an interest and curiosity in  you to look into it yourself.  Lots of good reading online.

The important thing here is that, in the fulness of God’s time, all things in heaven and earth will be gathered under the authority and rule of Jesus Christ.  I look forward to the day when all the questions will be answered, all the worrying and fear and doubt and unrest will be over, and Jesus will forever be the center.

What a day that will be!

  1. I was thinking only yesterday how I’d love to see the rich places of history in Virginia and Pennsylvania but my traveling days are gone. Then I thought, well maybe in the millennium if the history has not all been destroyed. Bob used to say that in the millennium he wanted to come back and be mayor of Martinsville.
