An Unholy Alliance

Matthew 16:1. “The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired Him that He would shew them a sign from heaven.”

Let’s see.  So far, Jesus had healed hundreds of people of all sorts of diseases and disabilities: He had walked on water; He had fed five thousand men plus women and children with only five loaves of bread and two fish; He had fed four thousan more with seven loaves and a few little fish; He  had spoken parables, healed the daughter of a Canaanite, Gentile woman—just to name a few of the miracles He had done openly and for all to see.

But now these two factions, who really weren’t overly fond of each other, joined forces to tempt (test) Jesus, because they wanted a sign from heaven.  I guess all those other events weren’t from heaven?  Or just weren’t quite enough?

I can’t wait to dig into how Jesus handled this one. Sent them home with their fringes in a twist, I think.

  1. Just read this morning how Moses told the Jews about to cross over to possess Canaan not to add anything to the law that had been given to Moses. Deut 12:32 That is exactly what the Pharisees did. Yet they were adding to their righteousness, so they thought. All they did was make things more difficult. Looking forward to the next post.
